The Rolling Stones on Ed Sullivan coming to DVD
Written by admin on September 8, 2011 – 6:08 pm -The Ed Sullivan archives are a rich source for vintage performances from the greatest stars in rock ‘n’ roll history, including the Rolling Stones. The band’s complete performances on the show are released in the US on November 1 on the 2-DVD set “6 Ed Sullivan Shows starring The Rolling Stones.”
Ahead of this on October 4 will be the single DVD edition titled “4 Ed Sullivan Shows starring The Rolling Stones.” Both titles feature remastered audio and visuals for optimum quality.
The Rolling Stones’ six appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show took place between October 25, 1964 and November 23, 1969. The band performed 17 songs in total across the six shows:
- October 25, 1964 – “Around and Around” and “Time Is On My Side”
- May 2, 1965 – “The Last Time,” “Little Red Rooster,” “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love” and “2120 South Michigan Avenue.”
- February 13, 1966 – “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “As Tears Go By” and “19th Nervous Breakdown”
- September 11, 1966 – “Paint It, Black,” “Lady Jane” and “Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadows?”
- January 15, 1967 – “Ruby Tuesday” and “Let’s Spend The Night Together”
- November 23, 1969 – “Gimme Shelter,” “Love In Vain” and “Honky Tonk Woman.”
The deluxe “6 Ed Sullivan Shows starring The Rolling Stones” set includes all performances and “4 Ed Sullivan Shows starring The Rolling Stones,” omits the first and last show.
Both editions feature complete shows, including performances by artists such as Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.
The deluxe edition also includes a 24-page booklet featuring rare Ed Sullivan Show documents and photos, and liner notes from Greil Marcus.

Executive producer of the sets, Andrew Solt, told Billboard:
“The best Rolling Stones TV performances are on these shows. On the concert films and on other shows you don’t get the same production values, and here the sound is as good as the visuals. … Groups knew they would appear in front of 35 million people so they rehearsed and made sure they would look good before going on. Knowing they were playing live on TV made them do their best.” |
