The Grateful Dead – “Crimson, White & Indigo”

Fans of the Grateful Dead will want to pick up a new single DVD/three CD set called “Crimson, White & Indigo,” which features the band’s July 7, 1989 concert at Philadelphia’s John F. Kennedy Stadium.

The Grateful Dead - The Grateful Dead were experiencing a career resurgence in 1989 and it is widely regarded as one of their best concert years. With this set you get the entire show on DVD, filmed with multiple cameras by the same crew that filmed the Buffalo gig from three days before that was released in 2005 on “Truckin’ Up to Buffalo.”

The DVD is the real selling point, but you also get a 24-track recording of the gig spread across three CDs.

Deadheads will find an interesting selection of songs here spanning the band’s career, including newer songs such as “Standing on the Moon.” Jerry Garcia is on good form, with strong vocals and authoritative guitar work throughout. Phil Lesh and Brent Mydland also shine, particularly on Box of Rain and Blow Away, respectively. Sadly, Mydland died one year later aged just 37.

If you bought and enjoyed “Truckin’ Up to Buffalo,” it’s a no-brainer that you will enjoy this set.
