Johnny Cash auction in December

Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles will be auctioning a huge number of items from the life and career of Johnny Cash in December.

The three-day sale, which commences on December 5, will feature over 1,000 lots, including guitars, handwritten lyrics, and stage outfits. A portion of the proceeds from the auction will go to MusiCares, a charity benefitting musicians in need.

Johnny Cash - Guitars Among the highlights of the sale are three guitars from different points in Cash’s career:

  • a vintage 1951 Martin guitar used in the studio, which later became the designated tour bus guitar (Est. $20,000/30,000)
  • a Grammer Johnny Cash model used extensively by Cash on The Johnny Cash Show ($30,000/40,000)
  • a Martin used by Cash in the 1980s, which appeared on the cover of the live album The Survivors. (Est. $20,000/30,000).

Another highlight of the auction is the jumpsuit that Cash wore during rehearsals at San Quentin prison (Est. $3,000/5,000). The jumpsuit features in the infamous photograph “The Finger.”

Other clothes up for sale include Cash’s bicentennial parade worn shirt (Est. $1,000/1,500), knee-high boots with an eagle design on alligator leather (Est. $1,500/2,000), and a Man in Black cape (Est. $2,000/3,000).
