“A Day in the Life” lyrics to be auctioned

Sotheby’s New York will auction off John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics to the Beatles classic “A Day in the Life” on June 18.

The double-sided sheet, which once belonged to Beatles road manager Mal Evans, shows how the lyrics developed, with cross-outs, corrections and reworkings. Lennon also indicates where McCartney’s “woke up, fell out of bed” lyrics would be inserted. McCartney had been working on these lyrics for a separate song, but they were considered a neat fit for Lennon’s song.

UK votes on best ever political songs

The UK’s New Statesmen magazine has published a list of the top 20 political songs, as voted for by their readers and members of the Political Studies Association.

Not surprisingly, the list contains some of the most famous protest songs of all time, including John Lennon’s “Imagine,” Bob Dylan’s “The Times They are a-Changin'” and Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land,” which takes the top spot.

The Beatles break up – forty years ago today

It was forty years ago today that Paul McCartney announced he was leaving the Beatles, thereby bringing an end to the most successfull band of all time.

The Beatles - 1969 The announcement wasn’t a bolt out of the blue as there had been lots of speculation over the fate of the Beatles in the previous 12 months, in light of solo projects that were being undertaken and rumours of increasing disunity within the band.
