Joey Covington of Jefferson Airplane dies aged 67

Joey Covington, former drummer with Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, has died in a car accident in Palm Springs, California.

CBS News has reported that the 67-year-old drummer died after his Sedan hit a wall on the side of the road. Police have said that he was not wearing a seatbelt.

Covington was born in East Conemaugh, Pennsylvania on June 27, 1945 and began playing drums aged 10. He joined Hot Tuna in 1969, which was a side project begun by Jefferson Airplane members Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen while Jefferson Airplane singer Grace Slick was undergoing surgery. Later that year, Covington appeared on Jefferson Airplane’s album “Volunteers,” and then took over from Spencer Dryden as the band’s full-time drummer.

Happy 70th Birthday to Jefferson Airplane’s Marty Balin

Marty Balin, founding member of American rock group Jefferson Airplane, celebrates his 70th birthday today.

Balin was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on January 30, 1942. He formed Jefferson Airplane in 1965 and recorded five albums before leaving the band in 1970. Among these were the classic “Surrealistic Pillow,” which hit number three on the Billboard album chart and spawned the singles “White Rabbit” and “Somebody to Love.” Another standout song from the period was the title track of the band’s 1969 album “Volunteers,” which was co-written by Balin and Kantner, and featured Balin and Grace Slick on lead vocals.

Song of the Week #81 – “Volunteers”

Jefferson Airplane’s 1969 rocker “Volunteers” is “Song of the Week” on Classic Pop Icons.

“Volunteers” was released on single in September 1969, backed with “We Can Be Together.” It was also the title track for the band’s fifth studio album which was released two months later.
