Steve Reid loses battle with cancer
Written by admin on April 13, 2010 – 10:50 am -American jazz drummer Steve Reid died last night in New York after battling cancer. He was 66 years old.
Reid took up drumming at age 16 and began working at the Apollo Theater under the direction of Quincy Jones. After graduating college, he went on to work with a range of great artists, including James Brown, Miles Davis, Dionne Warwick, T-Bone Walker, Peggy Lee, Fats Domino, Ornette Coleman and Sun Ra. He was also a session drummer for Motown. It’s Reid’s great drum work on Martha and the Vandellas’ classic “Dancing in the Street.” |
