Springsteen at London screening of “Darkness” documentary

Bruce Springsteen delighted the audience at the BFI Southbank in London tonight by taking to the stage to answer questions following the screening of the documentary “The Promise: The Making Of ‘The Darkness On The Edge Of Town.” Bruce was joined on stage by his manager, Jon Landau, and the director of the documentary, Thom Zimny. |
“The Promise: The Making Of ‘The Darkness On The Edge Of Town” is a 90-minute documentary which explores the making of Springsteen’s classic 1978 album through archive studio footage and interviews. The documentary forms part of the exciting new 3 CD/3 DVD (or 3 Blu-ray) box set “The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story”, which will also feature a remastered version of the album, 21 previously-unreleased songs from the Darkness era, and hours of video of vintage and modern performances.
Springsteen described how he was plagued by uncertainty during the Darkness sessions:
| “I was so full of doubt that the only way I knew to get somewhere was to struggle away for hours and hours. Each one of us has a story inside, and that story doesn’t let you go. I kept having to answer the call of that story but I couldn’t explain that at the time to the other guys. So they thought I was just trying to drive them crazy.” |
He also discussed the new songs that will feature on the box set and why they didn’t make the cut on the original album:
| “We made a lot of music… and the music that was left out was truly a separate record. We stumbled our way to ten songs and they’ve stood up over the years. There’s a lot of beautiful music we had a chance to finish over the summer and I hope people get a kick out of it.” |
“The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story” will be released on November 16 as a DVD or Blu-ray set. The unreleased tracks can also be purchased on a separate 2-CD collection called “The Promise.”
