Scorsese’s George Harrison film to air on HBO and BBC
Written by admin on July 14, 2011 – 6:17 pm -| Martin Scorsese’s much anticipated three-hour documentary on George Harrison will debut on HBO over two nights on October 5 and 6. It will also air in the UK on BBC2 in November to coincide with the 10th anniversary of George Harrison’s death.
“George Harrison – Living in the Material World” will examine the life of Harrison from his early years in Liverpool, through his time with the Beatles and his solo projects. Viewers will be treated to unseen footage and interviews with many of those closest to the star, including Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Martin and Eric Clapton. |

The film is a collaboration between Scorsese and Harrison’s widow, Olivia, who has also put together an accompanying book on her late husband, featuring photos, letters, diaries and other memorabilia from their personal archives.
Scorsese is no stranger to musical documentaries, having produced the “The Last Waltz” (1978) about the final concert of The Band, “No Direction Home: Bob Dylan” (2005) and the Rolling Stones documentary “Shine a light” (2008). In a statement on the Harrison movie, he said:
| “I first came to know George through the music, which was the soundtrack of our world – those beautifully lyrical guitar breaks and solos, those unforgettable songs of George’s like I Me Mine or If I Needed Someone. After the Beatles George and his music seemed to open up and flower. I will never forget the first time I heard All Things Must Pass, the overwhelming feeling of taking in all that glorious music for the first time. It was like walking into a cathedral.” |

Spending time with Olivia (Harrison), interviewing so many of George’s closest friends, reviewing all that footage, some of it never seen before, and listening to all of that magnificent music – it was a joy, and an experience I’ll always treasure.” |
“George Harrison – Living in the Material World” is out on DVD and Blu-ray on October 10 but is not yet available for pre-order. The book is out on September 15 in the US/Canada and on October 3 in the UK, and can be pre-ordered now from:
