Rush, Heart and Donna Summer among Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees
Written by admin on December 11, 2012 – 10:38 pm -The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced that its 2013 inductees will be: Rush, Heart, Randy Newman, Public Enemy, Donna Summer and Albert King.
Veteran record executive, Lou Adler, and producer-arranger-composer-conductor, Quincy Jones, will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award for non-performers.
The names were revealed by Flea, bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, at a press conference in Los Angeles. Joel Peresman, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said “We are thrilled to announce this year’s class of inductees, which again represents the broad, compelling and significant definition of rock and roll.”
Geddy Lee of Rush told Rolling Stone “It’s a terrific honor and we’ll show up smiling. It made my mom happy, so that’s worth it.” He also thanked the Rush fans for supporting the band’s entry into the Hall of Fame, noting “It was a cause they championed. I’m very relieved for them and we share this honor with them, for sure.”
Ann Wilson of Heart has also welcomed the news, saying “Some people have an idea of what the shape of rock & roll is supposed to look like. We’re not really it. Personally, that’s why I think it’s taken quite a while … We’re always traveling and out there doing it. It can start to feel like you’re a tree falling in the forest, but nobody notices. So this kind of acknowledgement is really sweet.”
Randy Newman joked “I thought maybe I’d have to die before they let me in. I’m really glad it happened when I was still around to see it.”
Public Enemy will join just three other hip-hop acts (Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run-D.M.C. and the Beastie Boys) in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Donna Summer’s induction is posthumous, following her sad death earlier this year. Albert King passed away in 1992.
The inductees were decided by around 600 votes from Rock Hall members and, for the first time, an online fan ballot. However, the intricacies of the voting system meant that the public’s second choice (after Rush), Deep Purple, did not make the final cut. The other acts who were on the ballot but did not make it through were the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Kraftwerk, the Marvelettes, the Meters, Procol Harum and N.W.A. Chic have now been nominated eight times without being inducted.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony takes place at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on April 18, 2013, and will be broadcast on HBO on May 18.
