Rolling Stones 50th anniversary tour on for 2013

The prospect of a 50th anniversary Rolling Stones tour this year seems to be over, but it now seems certain that the band will hit the road in 2013.

Richards told Rolling Stone that the 50th anniversary theme would still work for next year:

“The Stones always really considered ’63 to be 50 years, because Charlie [Watts] didn’t actually join until January. We look upon 2012 as sort of the year of conception, but the birth is next year.”

Rolling Stone also quotes a top concert-business source who notes that instead of a full tour, the band prefer the idea of multi-night runs in venues such as New York City’s Madison Square Garden, Los Angeles’ Staples Center, and London’s O2 Arena.

The band got together for a three-day informal session at a London studio last December, with Jagger showing up on the final day. Jagger told Rolling Stone “We played a lot of blues and outtakes of ‘Some Girls’ and things like that. It went very well.”

The presence of Bill Wyman at the December session has also prompted speculation that the former Rolling Stone might rejoin the band on tour in 2013. Richards says “I think he’s up for it. We talked about it. I’ll let you know when I can.”

Ahead of a possible 2013 tour comes a 50th anniversary documentary later this year that will be packed with unseen footage and music, and what director Brett Morgen describes as “the most extensive group interviews they’ve ever done.”

The Rolling Stones were last on the road for the two-year Bigger Bang tour, which concluded in August 2007. Footage from the tour was featured in Martin Scorsese’s 2008 documentary “Shine A Light.”

Here’s three great performances from the Zilker Park, Austin, TX show on October 22, 2006:

“Sympathy For The Devil” – Rolling Stones

“Brown Sugar” – Rolling Stones

“Let’s Spend The Night Together – Rolling Stones
