Rick Huxley, bassist for The Dave Clark Five, died on Monday aged 72 after suffering from emphysema for a number of years.

Huxley was born in Dartford, Kent on August 5, 1940, and was a founding member of The Dave Clark Five as a teenager in 1958. They would become one of the most successful of the 1960s beat groups.

The Dave Clark Five’s debut UK hit was an excellent cover of The Contours’ “Do You Love Me”.

The follow-up UK hit, “Glad All Over,” knocked The Beatles’ “I Want To Hold Your Hand” off the top of the UK singles chart in January 1964.

The group went on to be one of the first so-called British Invasion groups to take America by storm, appearing on the Ed Sullivan show in March 1964, one month after The Beatles’ legendary debut. In this breakthrough year, The Dave Clark Five achieved six Gold records (million sellers) in the US, namely “Glad All Over,” “Bits and Pieces,” “Do You Love Me,” “Can’t You See That She’s Mine,” “Because,” and “Anyway You Want It”.

The Dave Clark Five disbanded in 1970 and Rick Huxley pursued a career in property.

Huxley was present when The Dave Clark Five were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.

Dave Clark paid tribute to his old bandmate on hearing the news:

“Rick was a real gentleman. He was very kind and had an amazing sense of humour – he was the funny one in the group, and a very talented musician.”

Dave Clark and Lenny Davidson are now the only two remaining original members of The Dave Clark Five.
