Rare Beatles and Stones photographs included in Christie’s auction
Written by admin on August 17, 2012 – 10:04 am -Joe Taylor of Paul Fraser Collectibles tells us about a forthcoming sale of Beatles and Stones photographs. |
A collection of Beatles and Rolling Stones photographs will sell at Christie’s London Sale on September 3.
The highest estimate among the collection is held by a photograph entitled The Beatles Backyard, which was taken by Terry O’Neill on one of his first assignments back in 1963. The shot was the first time the Beatles had appeared on the front page of a British newspaper, causing the issue to promptly sell out at the height of Beatlemania. A superb early image, it will sell with an estimate of £5,000-6,000.

Following this will be a silver gelatin print, numbered 2 from an edition of 21, which was released from the Norman Parkinson archive in 2009. Picturing the Beatles at the President Hotel in London’s Russell Square, it was dubbed “The Kebab Shot” by Parkinson in reference to its linear composition. Christie’s has set a £1,800-2,200 estimate.
Paul Fraser Collectibles specialises in sourcing the finest Beatles memorabilia. We are currently offering a rare signed postcard with the autographs of all four Beatles on one page.
Another shot from Terry O’Neill, this time of the Rolling Stones, will sell with a £1,600-1,800 estimate. In contrast to the clean cut image of the Beatles, it shows the Stones surrounded by their adoring female fans, despite being deemed too ugly by the majority of national newspapers. The print has been signed by O’Neill and is numbered 1 out of a run of 50.
We are currently offering this unique Rolling Stones autographed guitar.
Also featuring will be a diptych from Norman Parkinson of actress Uma Thurman’s mother, Nena Von Schlebrugge. Taken in 1958, the shoot shows Von Schlebrugge modelling Yves Saint Laurent’s first collection for Christian Dior in London’s St Martin’s Lane and was featured in Vogue’s Young Idea feature of the same year. It will sell with a £3,000-4,000 estimate.
