Radio show on classic Dylan protest song
Written by admin on May 16, 2010 – 9:28 pm -BBC Radio 4 are broadcasting a 30-minute documentary about Bob Dylan’s protest song “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll” tomorrow morning (May 17) at 11am BST.
The show will be presented by Dylan biographer Howard Sounes. |
Bob Dylan wrote “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll” in 1963 and it appeared on his 1964 album “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” The song recounts a court case where a tobacco farmer from Maryland, William Devereux “Billy” Zantzinger, receives just six months in a county jail for killing a black barmaid, Hattie Carroll. Dylan was evidently disgusted that a black woman’s life could be valued so lightly.
Sounes travelled to Maryland with producer Sara Parker and examined previously unheard trial evidence and contemporaneous court notes, and spoke to witnesses to the crime.
The show also features an audio recording of Zantzinger made by Sounes when he was researching his Dylan biography “Down the Highway: The Life of Bob Dylan” several years ago.
