Phoebe Snow dies aged 60
Written by admin on April 26, 2011 – 7:17 pm -American singer-songwriter, Phoebe Snow, died today in Edison, New Jersey. The 60-year-old had been in a coma since suffering from a brain haemorrhage in January 2010.
Phoebe Snow was perhaps best known for her 1975 hits “Poetry Man” and “Harpo’s Blues,” from her self-titled debut album. These successes led to her being nominated for a best new artist Grammy Award in 1975. |
After this initial success, Snow’s career took a back seat to caring for her daughter Valerie Rose, who had been born severely brain damaged. Over the years, she did continue to put solo albums out and also work with other stars, such as Billy Joel, Chaka Khan and Paul Simon. Snow also sang for President Bill Clinton at Camp David, as he was a fan.
Snow’s last original studio album was “Natural Wonder” in 2003. She had been recording new material and rehearsing for a weekly show just before falling ill last year.
Snow’s manager and friend, Sue Cameron, said:
“The loss of this unique and untouchable voice is incalculable. Phoebe was one of the brightest, funniest and most talented singer-songwriters of all time and, more importantly, a magnificent mother to her late brain-damaged daughter, Valerie, for 31 years. Phoebe felt that was her greatest accomplishment.” |
