Pete Townshend leaves stage during The Who’s tour opener

The Who’s “Quadrophenia and More” tour got off to a shaky start in Sunrise, Florida last night as Pete Townshend walked off stage during the encore and didn’t return.

Townshend left the stage during “Better You Bet,” after complaining that the sound monitors were “too loud”. The band briefly waited for the guitarist to return, before closing the gig with “Baba O’ Riley”.

Townshend has experienced hearing problems for years and suffers from tinnitus. His brother, Simon, who plays guitar with the band, confirmed on Twitter that Pete had left the stage because of sound issues:

“Pete walked off tonight because it was too loud. Was a good show but had some technical problems.”

Putting aside the premature end, it was a strong start to the 36-city tour, with a complete run-through of the “Quadrophenia” album, incorporating videos of Keith Moon singing his part of the song “Bell Boy” and Keith Entwistle’s bass solo on “5:15”.

The band also played a selection of their best loved material, including “Pinball Wizard” and “Who Are You?”

  1. John Ott Says:

“Pete Townshend leaves stage during The Who’s tour opener” headline may imply that he didn’t come back. I also wasn’t aware of he suffers tinnitus. He’s justified.

  2. admin Says:

It does imply that, which is fine because Townshend didn’t come back. The health issue is made clear though and there’s no criticism of Townshend.
