Paul McCartney announces digital library

Sir Paul McCartney has entered into a deal with Hewlett Packard (HP) to digitize and deliver his extensive library via a “private cloud”.
HP will create a state of the art content management system to house McCartney’s images, artwork, paintings, film, videos and songs in a digital format. |
McCartney has spoken enthusiastically about the partnership with HP:
| “I’ve always been interested in creative ideas and new ways of reaching people, so this is a really exciting initiative for me. I hope it will allow people who might be interested to access parts of our archives they might otherwise not be able to. I’m looking forward to working with HP on this project.” |
No hints have been given as to what information will be available to consumers, but there will no doubt be many opportunities to monetize the library in this digital age.
Putting aside the commercial angle, it’s encouraging to see such a major artist taking care to ensure his legacy is preserved for future enjoyment and study. This should be done for other major artists with significant legacies, such as Springsteen and Dylan, and posthumously for artists such as Elvis Presley.
As McCartney prepares to catalogue his life’s work, he is also launching an ambitious reissue programme of his solo and Wings catalogue. This starts on November 2 with the release of multiple configurations of his number one album “Band on the Run.” You can buy:
- a single disc standard edition
- a 3 disc (2CD, 1 DVD) special edition
- a 4 disc (3CD, 1DVD) deluxe edition which includes a 120-page book
- a 2 disc vinyl edition featuring the original album and bonus tracks. This also comes with an MP3 download of all tracks.
