OBEs for Nash and Cale
Written by admin on June 12, 2010 – 9:06 am -Two veteran musicians appeared in the Queen’s annual birthday honours list.
OBEs (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) went to co-founder of the Velvet Underground, John Cale, and to Graham Nash, who was a member of both the Hollies and Crosby, Stills and Nash.
Cale co-founded the Velvet Underground with Lou Reed in 1965 and appeared on their first two albums, “Velvet Underground and Nico” and “White Light/White Heat.”
The Welsh musician left the Velvet Underground in 1968 and has since released around 30 albums, and also collaborated with many artists, including Patti Smith, the Stooges, James Dean Bradfield and Siouxsie and the Banshees. |
Cale was surprised by the honour:
“I’m stunned. It makes you think ‘well maybe I did something right’ – and now I’ve got to figure out what that was. I thought I was too much of a tearaway.” |
Here’s John Cale with a live version of “Paris 1919.”
Graham Nash contributed his tenor vocals and songwriting skills to many hits for The Hollies and Crosby, Stills and Nash.
He was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his work with The Hollies, having already been inducted as a member of Crosby, Stills and Nash. |
Nash, who is now based in the US, struck a patriotic note when commenting on his OBE:
“Everything I learned about being a decent human being I learned in England and I am grateful to be honoured by the country of my birth.” |
Fans of Nash will be interested in last year’s “Graham Nash: Reflections” three-CD set. The set provides an excellent 40-year career overview, including 32 previously unreleased tracks. An impressive 150-page booklet is included with the set.
Here’s Nash singing “On the Line” in 1974.
OBEs also went to Tamara Mellon, founder of luxury shoemakers Jimmy Choo; jockey Tony McCoy and former rugby international Andy Ripley.
There were CBEs (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for Catherine Zeta Jones, and cookery writers Pru Leith and Marguerite Patten.
Recipients of the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) included racing driver David Coulthard, Welsh footballer Gary Speed, bob skeleton
Olympian Amy Williams, and 90-year-old former England goalkeeper Bert Williams.
