“People, Hell and Angels” features Hendrix experimenting with Stax, Wall of Sound and even jazz motifs. The 12 songs were recorded between March 1968 and August 1970.
The album was co-produced by Janie Hendrix , original Hendrix engineer Eddie Kramer, and John McDermott.
“People, Hell and Angels” – Track by track
- “Earth Blues” – a stripped down funky version of the track featuring Hendrix, Billy Cox and Buddy Miles (recorded December 19, 1969)
- “Somewhere” – a March 1968 recording that is entirely different from any previous version. Hendrix is joined by Buddy Miles and Stephen Stills
- “Hear My Train A Comin'” – a great blues track taken from Hendrix’s first session with Cox and Miles in May 1969
- “Bleeding Heart” – recorded at the same May 1969 session, this Elmore James song had long been a favourite with Hendrix. After instructing Cox and Miles that he wanted a totally different beat than the standard arrangement, Hendrix performed a version unlike any other he had previously attempted
- “Let Me Move You” – Hendrix jammed with his old friend saxophonist Lonnie Youngblood on this up tempo rocker in March 1969
- “Izabella” – this song was introduced at the Woodstock festival in August 1969 and recorded a studio version the same month. This version, featuring Larry Lee on rhythm guitar, is markedly different from the single master released in 1970
- “Easy Blues” – this instrumental was originally featured in edited form on the 1981 album “Nine To The Universe”. Here it’s nearly twice the length
- “Crash Landing” – the song is known as the title track for a 1975 album, but this original version recorded with Billy Cox and drummer Rocky Isaac has never been heard before
- “Inside Out” – Hendeix experiments with the rhythm pattern that would ultimately take form as ” Ezy Ryder”. Mitch Mitchell is on drums and Hendrix takes the bass and guitar parts
- “Hey Gypsy Boy” – an overdubbed version appeared on “Midnight Lightning” in 1975, but this is the original March 1969 recording. Hendrix is joined by Buddy Miles .
- “Mojo Man” – Hendrix was asked to add his unique guitar style to Albert & Arthur Allen’s (the Ghetto Fighters) recording
- “Villanova Junction Blues” – another track from the May 1969 session with Cox and Miles. The song was never fully finished, but did feature in his Woodstock set a few months later.
“People, Hell and Angels” is out now in North America on CD and vinyl. It will debut on April 1 in the UK on CD and is out already on vinyl.
“Somewhere” is also available as an MP3 or CD single.
