Folk singer Gil Robbins dies aged 80
Written by admin on April 10, 2011 – 5:56 pm -American folk singer, Gil Robbins, has died at his home in Esteban Cantu, Mexico, aged 80. Robbins’ best known work was with the early ’60s group The Highwaymen.
Robbins was a popular musician in New York’s Greenwich Village folk scene before joining the Highwaymen in 1962. He recorded five albums with the group before they disbanded in 1964, after which he managed the Gaslight Club in Greenwich Village. |
Robbins’ son, Oscar-winning actor Tim Robbins, said:
“His commitment to social justice was evident to us from an early age, as was his infectious mischievous sense of humour. His passing has created great sadness for all of us and our mother but we take comfort in knowing that the angels will soon be soothed by the songs coming from his beautiful baritone voice.” |
Gil worked with his son as a consultant on the movie “Bob Roberts” and also had a minor role in “Dead Man Walking.”
In addition to Tim Robbins, Gil was survived by his son, David; his wife, Mary; his daughters, Adele and Gabrielle; his brother, Tom; and four grandchildren.
