Former Fleetwood Mac guitarist/vocalist, Bob Welch, died today at his home in Nashville. A police spokesman confirmed that Welch died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and that he did leave a suicide note. The 66-year-old had been suffering health problems for some time.

Welch replaced Peter Green in Fleetwood Mac in 1971 and over the next three years appeared on the albums “Future Games” (1971), “Bare Trees” (1972), “Penguin,” “Mystery to Me” (1973), and “Heroes Are Hard To Find” (1974). He followed his Fleetwood Mac stint by forming a hard rock group called Paris, with whom he released the albums “Paris” and “Hunt Sales,” before disbanding in 1977. He then kicked-off a successful solo career with the platinum-selling album “French Kiss,” which produced the hit singles “Ebony Eyes,” “Hot Love, Cold World,” and “Sentimental Lady,” which was a re-recording of a track he had originally recorded for “Bare Trees”. Welch released several more albums over the next few years, the most successful of which was “Three Hearts” (1979), but he had reached his commercial peak with “French Kiss”. In 1999, after years concentrating on writing songs for others, Welch released a tribute to bebop music titled “Bob Welch Looks At Bop”. He followed this up with two albums of Fleetwood Mac re-recordings and new compositions in 2003 and 2006.

On hearing of Welch’s death, Mick Fleetwood told Reuters:

“He was a very, very profoundly intelligent human being and always in good humor, which is why this is so unbelievably shocking. He was a huge part of our history which sometimes gets forgotten … mostly his legacy would be his songwriting abilities that he brought to Fleetwood Mac, which will survive all of us. If you look into our musical history, you’ll see a huge period that was completely ensconced in Bob’s work.”

Stevie Nicks has also responded to the news:

“He was an amazing guitar player – he was funny, sweet – and he was smart – I’m so very sorry for his family and for the family of Fleetwood Mac – so, so sad.”
