The official Elvis website has announced that Elvis on Tour will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on August 3. There will also be a special screening of the Golden Globe-winning documentary on August 14 in Memphis, as part of the annual “Elvis Week.”

Elvis on Tour was Elvis Presley’s final movie. It is a documentary that follows Elvis in rehearsal and on tour in March/April 1972, capturing some stunning performances along the way.

Among the songs featured are: “See See Rider,” “Proud Mary,” “Burning Love,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Never Been to Spain,” “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” and “An American Trilogy.”

Elvis on Tour will be remastered in High Definition with 16×9 2.40 letterboxed image, as seen in the theatrical release. The Blu-ray audio will be DTS-HD Master Audio (5.1 Surround); DVD audio will be Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround. The Blu-ray will be packaged as a book, with Elvis photos, quotes and trivia, a tour itinerary for the April tour filmed for the movie, and other background information.

Elvis on Tour on the big screen

The special screening of Elvis on Tour in Memphis will take place on August 14 at the Orpheum Theater, which was one of Elvis’ favourite movie houses. The event will include a performance by former members of the Stamps Quartet who were backing singers for Elvis in the movie. There will also be an exhibit of rarely seen artifacts from the Graceland archives and some never-before-seen Elvis footage shown.

No extras?

It’s looking like this will be a straight release of the original movie, without additional songs and outtakes. This is a shame, as there has already been an official release of outtakes in the form of the Lost Performances VHS in the early 1990s, and many outtakes released unofficially over the last few years. The inclusion of some extra tracks would have been nice, particularly given how long fans have waited for this movie to get a DVD release.

Rarities on CD

Look out for an interesting CD project to coincide with this release. Ernst Jorgensen, who heads up Elvis’ Follow that Dream collectors’ label has said in the past that Elvis on Tour material is being held back to coincide with the release of the movie. The release will most likely take the form of a complete concert from the April 1972 tour.
