McLean is best known for his worldwide hits “American Pie”, which was inspired partly by the death of Buddy Holly, and “Vincent”, which was a tribute to the painter Vincent van Gogh. |
Both “American Pie” and “Vincent” appeared on McLean’s 1970 album “American Pie” which hit number one on the US album charts and was by far his biggest commercial success.

Another popular composition from McLean was “And I Love You So” which has been covered by many artists, including Elvis Presley, Perry Como and Glen Campbell.
McLean’s last major commercial success was an excellent cover of Roy Orbison’s “Crying”, which was a big worldwide hit, reaching number one in the UK and number five in the US.

Don McLean is still touring and recording. His last album was “Addicted to Black” released in April of this year.
