Dolly Parton charms Glastonbury

Dolly Parton entertained an enthusiastic Glastonbury crowd during her hour-long set in the now traditional legends slot on Sunday afternoon.

The country legend took to the stage in a sparkly white trouser suit and delivered an engaging set full of familiar hits and appealing new songs from the “Blue Smoke” album.

Dolly also showed off her musical prowess, playing guitar, banjo, fiddle, autoharp, and saxophone – taking a crack at Boots Randolph’s “Yakety Sax,” which is better known as the Benny Hill theme tune.

The audience warmed to Dolly as she told them of her background as a farmer’s daughter (“I grew up in the country, so this mud ain’t nothing new to me”) and discussed the history behind songs such as “Coat of Many Colors” and “Jolene” – joking that Jolene can come and get her grey-haired husband now if she still wants him.

Dolly closed the show with “9 to 5,” before coming back to perform “Lay Your Hands On Me” (with Bon Jovi’s Richie Sambora) and “I Will Always Love You” for her encore. It was evident that Dolly was delighted by the reception that she received from the crowd and perhaps a little surprised that so many knew her lyrics well enough to sing along.

Speaking to Jo Whiley after the show, Dolly said “It was exciting and it was fun. It was everything that everybody said it was going to be”.

Before the show, Dolly was presented with an award in recognition of selling 100 million records worldwide. She said that she would hang it in her Dollywood Museum in Tennessee.
