Deep Purple are releasing a five-disc box set to commemorate the 40th anniversary of their 1972 album “Machine Head”. The release includes four CDs, one DVD and a 60-page book.

“Machine Head” was Deep Purple’s sixth studio album and third featuring the so-called Mark-II line-up of Ian Gillan (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Roger Glover (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards), and Ian Paice (drums). The band began recording the album in December 1971 at the Grand Hotel in Montreux, Switzerland. A fire at their intended recording location at the Montreux Casino inspired the classic song “Smoke On The Water,” which opened side two of “Machine Head”.

“Machine Head” topped the UK album chart and reaching number seven on the Billboard 200 in the US.

The five-disc “Machine Head” box set comprises:

• CD 1 – Original album (2012 remaster)
• CD 2 – Roger Glover’s 1997 mixes
• CD 3 – Original album in quad SQ stereo (2012 remaster)
• CD 4 – In Concert ’72 from Paris Theatre, London, March 9, 1972 (2012 mix)
• DVD-audio – 2012 high resolution remaster & surround mixes.

The B-side to the “Never Before” single, “When a Blind Man Cries,” was not on the original album but is included here. It also features on the single-disc 40th anniversary edition, which is a 2012 remaster of the original album.

The 60-page hardback book includes essays from Roger Glover and Phil Alexander of Mojo magazine, and an interview with photographer Didi Zill, whose photos feature in the book.

The “In Concert ’72” live album is also released as a separate vinyl title, complete with a bonus 7-inch single of “Never Before” and non-album B-side “When a Blind Man Cries”.

The live vinyl release and the 40th anniversary “Machine Head” box set and single disc editions are out on October 15 in the UK and October 16 in North America.

The “Machine Head” anniversary was also marked last month with the release of the multi-artist “Re-Machined: A Tribute to Deep Purple’s Machine Head”. The album features various hard rock acts performing the songs from the classic album. This lengthy promo provides a good overview of the project:
