CKx planning Elvis duets project and early years television show
Written by admin on May 31, 2012 – 9:08 pm -A new drama series based on Elvis’ early life, a revamp of Graceland and a duets album are three projects being considered by CKx, according to the New York Times.
CKx, which will soon be renamed Core Media Group, owns the global rights to the name, image and likeness of Elvis Presley, and the operation of Graceland. |
Of the three projects, only the drama series comes as a surprise, as there has been no talk of this before. It’s not clear whether this would be in addition to the rumoured “Last Train To Memphis” movie project or in place of it. A similar project was attempted in 1990, but it was cancelled because ratings were poor.
The Graceland revamp has been on the back burner for several years, with land around the mansion being bought up to add attractions and make the visiting experience more substantial. There is no suggestion that the actual mansion is going to be touched.
The duets album, which would be produced in conjunction with Sony, has also been rumoured for a while. The idea would be to pair contemporary acts with Elvis, in a similar fashion as was done with the Frank Sinatra duets album and the more recent Tony Bennett projects. According to the New York Times, a tour is also being considered, with artists singing alongside an Elvis hologram. There is already a precedent for touring an Elvis show without Elvis actually present, as the “Elvis – The Concert” show which features Elvis on a big screen singing along with his original band has been on the road for more than a decade.
The company is also planning a revamp of American Idol in order to combat the recent 30% ratings drop.
