Celebrating 50 years since The Beatles’ Cavern debut
Written by admin on February 9, 2011 – 6:00 am -Fans of The Beatles will gather at the Cavern Club today to mark the 50th anniversary of the band’s debut performance at the venue.
The Beatles’ debut at the club was a lunchtime session on February 9, 1961. This was followed by almost three hundred performances before their final appearance at the club on August 3, 1963. |
A day of events is planned at the Cavern Club today, including a set by Beatles tribute band The Mersey Beatles. Liverpool City Council are also unveiling a revamp of Matthew Street, including a new ceiling of light memorial nicknamed Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, which will run the length of the street.
The Cavern Club first opened in 1957 as a jazz club and was closed in May 1973. The original club was demolished, but it was rebuilt and re-opened in the 1980s using some of the original bricks and occupying around 50% of the original space. The Cavern Club still hosts live music and it has been used as a warm-up venue for major acts, including Oasis and The Arctic Monkeys. Paul McCartney returned there for a gig in 1999.
Tonight also sees a celebration of the Cavern Club on UK television. “I Was There When The Beatles Played The Cavern”, hosted by David Morrisey, airs at 10:35pm on ITV1.
