Myrna Smith sadly passed away yesterday from kidney failure aged 69. The American singer was a member of the female vocal group the Sweet Inspirations, who were best known for their work with Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley. Myrna is the second of the Sweet Inspirations to pass away this year. Sylvia Shemwell died on February 13, 2010. Myrna Smith

Song of the Week #32 – “Dock of the Bay”

Otis Redding’s biggest hit “Dock of the Bay” is Song of the Week on Classic Pop Icons.

“Dock of the Bay” was released on single in January 1968, backed with “Sweet Lorene.” Otis had tragically died on December 10, 1967 in a plane crash outside Madison, Wisconsin. This was the first posthumous release. The song also appeared on the album of the same name, which was released in February 1968.

Happy Birthday to Dionne Warwick who celebrates her 70th birthday today. Dionne was born Marie Dionne Warrick on December 12, 1940 in East Orange, New Jersey.

Dionne began singing in church as a child. Her first professional performances were with the Drinkard Singers gospel group, whose members included her mother, aunts and uncles.

The 2011 Grammy Hall of Fame inductees

The Beatles, Fats Domino, Otis Redding and Joan Baez are among the artists whose recordings will be entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011.

The Grammy Hall of Fame Award was established by The Recording Academy’s National Trustees in 1973. The aim was to “honor recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance that are at least 25 years old.” To date, 881 recordings have been inducted.
