Song of the Week #50 – “Runaway”

The 50th Classic Pop Icons Song of the Week is Del Shannon’s rock ‘n’ roll classic “Runaway” which fittingly hit number one 50 years ago today.

“Runaway” is one of the most iconic songs of the rock ‘n’ roll era. It began life as “Little Runaway” and it was Shannon’s manager, Ollie McLaughlin, who suggested a rewrite that would place the Musitron at the centre of the song. The Musitron was a keyboard instrument that was modified from a clavioline by musician Max Crook. McLaughlin’s suggestion was inspired, as the groundbreaking Musitron solo is one of the most memorable instrumental breaks in pop history.

Song of the Week #49 – “Go Your Own Way”

This week’s Song of the Week is Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way.”

“Go Your Own Way” was released on single in January 1977, backed with “Silver Springs.” The following month it appeared on the band’s classic album “Rumours,” which went on to become one of the best selling albums of all time.

Song of the Week #48 – “Soul Man”

This week’s Song of the Week is Sam & Dave’s signature hit “Soul Man.”

“Soul Man” was released on single in August 1967, backed with “May I Baby,” and also appeared on their third album “Soul Men,” released in October of the same year.
