Steve Reid loses battle with cancer

American jazz drummer Steve Reid died last night in New York after battling cancer. He was 66 years old.

Steve Reid died aged 66 Reid took up drumming at age 16 and began working at the Apollo Theater under the direction of Quincy Jones. After graduating college, he went on to work with a range of great artists, including James Brown, Miles Davis, Dionne Warwick, T-Bone Walker, Peggy Lee, Fats Domino, Ornette Coleman and Sun Ra. He was also a session drummer for Motown. It’s Reid’s great drum work on Martha and the Vandellas’ classic “Dancing in the Street.”

Rock photographer Jim Marshall dies aged 74

Legendary rock ā€˜nā€™ roll photographer Jim Marshall died in his sleep last night at the age of 74.

Jim Marshall was born in 1936 and began his photographic career in 1960. Jazz musicians were the original focus of Marshall’s lens. He captured artists such as Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane. Marshall went on to take some of the most iconic photographs in rock history, featuring artists such as Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and Johnny Cash.

Dale Hawkins dies aged 73

Rockabilly pioneer Dale Hawkins died on Saturday (Feb 13th) at the age of 73 after several years battling colon cancer.

Dale Hawkins Dale Hawkins was born Delmar Allen Hawkins on August 22, 1936, on a plantation in Gold Mine, La. His father was a country musician and his mother was a teacher and day worker. He earned his place in rock history for co-writing and recording the 1957 hit “Suzie Q.” The song was recorded at radio station KWKH in Shreveport, La in 1957. The memorable guitar riff on “Suzie Q” was played by 15-year-old James Burton, who went on to play guitar for Ricky Nelson and to lead Elvis Presley’s TBC band in the 1970s.
