Bernard Wilson of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes Bernard Wilson of the legendary group Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes died on December 26 aged 64. The baritone singer passed away at Kresson View Center in Voorhees, New Jersey, after suffering a stroke and a heart attack.

Teena Marie dies aged 54

Soul singer Teena Marie died yesterday at her home in Pasadena, California aged 54. She was born Mary Christine Brockert in Santa Monica, California on March 5, 1956.

Teena Marie signed with Motown in 1976 and made four albums for the label from 1979 to 1981. She was mentored by funk legend Rick James, with whom she would have a long professional and personal relationship.

Myrna Smith sadly passed away yesterday from kidney failure aged 69. The American singer was a member of the female vocal group the Sweet Inspirations, who were best known for their work with Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley. Captain Beefheart dies aged 69

American musician and artist Don Van Vliet, also known as Captain Beefheart, died today aged 69 after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. He was born in Glendale, California, on January 15, 1941.

Captain Beefheart - Don Van Vliet Some of Van Vliet’s earliest musical experiments were with Frank Zappa with whom he became friends as a teenager. His earliest success came with Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band. The band released their first single in 1966 and their first album, “Safe as Milk”, the following year.

James Phelps dies aged 78

Gospel and R&B singer James Phelps died in Los Angeles on Tuesday from complications related to diabetes.

James Phelps was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on April 2, 1932. His early music career centred around gospel music. As a member of the groups the Holy Wonders and the Soul Stirrers he performed with Lou Rawls and Sam Cooke, respectively.
