Written by admin on December 30, 2010 – 9:29 pm -Bobby Farrell, frontman of disco legends Boney M, has died in a hotel room in St. Petersburg, Russia. The 61-year-old was in the middle of a tour with his group Bobby Farrell’s Boney M and he had performed the night before.
The cause of death has not yet been disclosed, but Farrell reportedly had suffered health problems for 10 years. |
Speaking from the Netherlands, Farrell’s agent, John Seine, said:
“He did a show that night as part of Bobby Farrell’s Boney M and they found him this morning dead in his hotel room. He did not feel well last night, and was having problems with his breathing, but he did the show anyway.” |
Farrell was born on the island of Aruba in the Lesser Antilles on October 6, 1949. He worked as a sailor after leaving school and ended up settling in Norway and then the Netherlands, where he began working as a DJ. He was given his break by singer/songwriter Frank Farian, who put together Boney M. Farian has claimed that he was the real male singer on the Boney M records.
Boney M sold 80 million records before breaking up in 1986, including “Daddy Cool”, “Mary’s Boy Child”, “Rasputin” and “Rivers Of Babylon”. The latter, backed with “Brown Girl in the Ring”, is the fifth best selling UK single ever.
