Billy Joel honoured by Steinway
Written by admin on December 14, 2011 – 10:38 pm -Billy Joel has become the first pop performer to be honoured with a portrait at Steinway Hall in New York. The portrait, painted by Paul Wyse, shows Joel at home next to his piano, wearing a leather jacket.
Steinway Hall is home to Steinway & Sons, who have been producing top quality, handmade pianos since 1853.
Although best known for pop music, Joel has turned his hand to classical music in recent years, including his collection of classical piano pieces, “Fantasies & Delusions,” in 2001.
Joel has spoken of his appreciation for Steinway pianos:
“They make pianos the old-fashioned way. They’re not mass-produced. They’re hand-crafted. When you find a great Steinway, it’s a phenomenal piano. There’s a quirkiness in individually produced pianos that I appreciate, sort of like handmade guitars.” |
Fox caught up with Billy Joel to discuss the Steinway honour and his latest musical plans.
Last month saw the release of a deluxe Legacy Edition of Billy Joel’s celebrated 1973 album “Piano Man.” This includes the original album remastered, plus a second CD featuring Joel’s performance at Philadelphia’s Sigma Sound Studio on April 15, 1972, as originally broadcast on WMMR. Among the songs from this broadcast are three that do not appear on any other Billy Joel album – “Long, Long Time,” “Josephine,” and “Rosalinda.” |
