Andrew Love of the Memphis Horns dies aged 70
Written by admin on April 14, 2012 – 1:50 pm -Andrew Love, who played saxophone on countless classic recordings as a member of the Memphis Horns, sadly passed away on Thursday (April 12) from complications associated with Alzheimer’s. He was 70.
As tenor saxophonist for the Memphis Horns, Andrew Love played an important role in creating the soul sound that came out of Memphis in the 1960s and 1970s, principally from Stax Records.

Among the classic hits that Love and Jackson appeared on were Otis Redding’s “Dock Of The Bay,” Wilson Pickett’s “In the Midnight Hour,” Dusty Springfield’s “Son Of A Preacher Man,” Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together”, and Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline”. They also featured on Elvis’ legendary Memphis sessions in 1969.
From the 1970s through to the 1990s, Love remained busy in the studio and on stage, playing behind the likes of Stephen Stills, Neil Diamond, Bonnie Raitt, Rod Stewart, Sting, Peter Gabriel, and the Robert Cray Band, with whom the Memphis Horns had a fruitful and longstanding relationship. The Memphis Horns also released an album titled “Flame Out” in 1992.
Love retired in 2003, after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s the previous year.
Earlier this year, the Memphis Horns won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys.
Stax Records has released the following statement in tribute to Andrew love:
“The Stax Museum of American Soul Music is saddened by the passing of one of Stax Records’ and the world’s most important musical artists, Andrew Love, who along with Wayne Jackson, received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year for their tremendous body of work as the Memphis Horns. Stax Records may never have enjoyed the success it achieved without Andrew. He was a kind, talented man who lived a fascinating and very important life and made a difference in the world in many ways. Our thoughts are with his wife Willie and his entire family, as well as with Wayne and Amy Jackson and Andrew’s millions of fans.” |
