Motown Records founder, Berry Gordy Jr, is planning a Broadway musical based on his life, according to the New York Post.
The project reportedly has a $100 million budget and will involve “Rent” producer, Kevin McCollum, and Universal Music CEO, Doug Morris. |
A source told the post:
“Berry’s been wanting to do this for a long time. He’s got the money and investors lined up. He’s trying to involve Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson.” |
No timetable has been announced for the project.
There is also speculation that Gordy has attempted to block a Marvin Gaye biopic by refusing to license music for the soundtrack, but a spokesperson for Gordy has denied this. Whatever the real story, director Cameron Crowe has walked away from the project and Julien Temple is now at the helm.
