Disco and soul diva Loleatta Holloway died on Monday from heart failure at Chicago’s Advocate South Suburban Hospital, according to her manager Ron Richardson. She was 64-years-old.

Chicago-born Holloway recorded six studio albums between 1973 and 1980 and had a string of dance hits, including the classic “Love Sensation.”

Holloway began her career as a gospel singer, recording alongside Albertina Walker as a member of the Caravans in the late 1960s. Her first solo success came in 1971 with her cover of Curtis Mayfield’s “Rainbow ’71” and shortly after she signed for the soul-based label Aware. Holloway cut two albums for Aware, “Loleatta” (1973) and “Cry to Me” (1975), and also had single chart success with “Cry to Me.”

After Aware went out of business, Holloway was signed to the Gold Mind label in 1976 and established herself as a disco act. She had a string of hits on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, including four number ones. Her biggest success and most enduring track was “Love Sensation” from the album of the same name in 1980.

In 1989, Holloways’s “Love Sensation” vocals were sampled for Black Box’s monster hit “Ride on Time.” Holloway was uncredited on the track, but took legal action and received an undisclosed settlement.

“Love Sensation” has been sampled for several other songs, including Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch’s 1991 hit “Good Vibrations,” which hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. This time Holloway received full credit for her vocals.

The last 20 years brought periodic successes for Holloway, often in collaboration with other artists, including the track “What Goes around Comes Around” with GTS in 2000, and “A Better World” with AgeHa and Jocelyn Brown in 2003.

Holloway is surviverd by four children and nine grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending.
