Disney pulls plug on “Yellow Submarine” remake
Written by admin on March 17, 2011 – 5:48 pm -Plans to remake The Beatles’ 1968 animated film “Yellow Submarine” have been dropped by Disney.
“Back to the Future” director Robert Zemeckis was scheduled to direct the remake, which would utilise motion-capture and 3D technology, and feature 16 original Beatles’ songs. The Beatles were to be played by Dean Lennox Kelly (John Lennon), Peter Serafinowicz (Paul McCartney), Cary Elwes (George Harrison) and Adam Campbell (Ringo Starr).
It has been suggested that the poor box office performance of the Zemeckis-produced movie “Mars Need Moms” was a factor in Disney’s decision to drop “Yellow Submarine”, but other sources claim that the decision was taken before that movie was released.
It is believed that Zemeckis will now look for another studio to back the “Yellow Submarine” remake project.
This is not the first Beatles-themed project that Zemeckis has been involved with. In 1978 he directed “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” which centred around the band’s first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964.
