The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town

Bruce Springsteen is putting the finishing touches on the much anticipated “Darkness on the Edge of Town” reissue, which will include unreleased tracks and a documentary film titled “The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town.”
The Thom Zimny-directed film was made in collaboration with Springsteen and will receive its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 14, 2010. |
Fans can expect “The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town” to include rare and unreleased footage from recording sessions and home rehearsals as Springsteen and the E Street band worked on the album in 1976-78. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Max Weinberg related how there was often a guy in the studio with a hand-held camera during the making of the album.
E Street band guitarist Steven Van Zandt recently spoke on a UK radio station about the prospect of unreleased material on the “Darkness on the Edge of Town” reissue:
| “We put 10 or so outtakes on the [1998] Tracks box set and we [have since] found 10 more. I’m not sure how many we’ll put on there. We’ll go back and he might finish a lyric on one or two, or finish a harmony on one or two, but we’ll keep them intact pretty much.” |
It’s not clear whether or not the “Darkness on the Edge of Town” set will include a bonus concert film, as was the case with the anniversary issue of “Born to Run” in 2005. The 1978 Darkness On The Edge of Town tour is often referred to as Springsteen’s best ever tour and there will be some disappointment among fans if no footage is included.
Strong sales for “London Calling: Live in Hyde Park”
In other Bruce news, the brilliant concert film “London Calling: Live in Hyde Park” has hit number one on DVD music charts in the US, UK, Germany, Ireland, Spain, Switzerland, Canada, Sweden, Norway and Austria. It is available as a 2-DVD set or a single Blu-ray. If you have a Blu-ray player, the latter comes highly recommended.

With the much-anticipated release of a commemorative box set for Darkness on the Edge of Town slated for this Christmas, Bruce Springsteen’s classic record is getting renewed attention in the music world. Details on the project are scarce; however, in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Steven Van Zandt mentioned that about 10 unreleased songs will be included in the box set. Fans are surely hungry for any and all material they can get from the 1978 recording sessions and subsequent tour.
