$1.2 million for Lennon’s “A Day in the Life” lyrics
Written by admin on June 18, 2010 – 9:01 pm -John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics to “A Day in the Life” have sold at auction in New York for $1.2 million (£809,000). They were expected to fetch $500,000-$700,000. The lyrics were purchased via phone by a private American collector.
The auction lot comprised two complete sets of the lyrics written in black felt marker and blue ballpoint pen. One is Lennon’s original first draft and the other, written mostly in capital letters, was most likely prepared for use in the recording studio.
The iconic “A Day in the Life” closed The Beatles’ classic “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album and the song is widely regarded as one of the band’s finest recordings.
The $1.2 million sale falls just short of the record paid for Beatles lyrics at auction, which was $1.25 million for “All You Need is Love” lyrics in 2005.
The lyrics are from the collection of Mal Evans, who was the Beatles’ road manager.
