The Essential Carole King If you don’t have a Carole King album in your collection, now is a good time to rectify that with the release of “The Essential Carole King.”

Carole King was a prolific and gifted writer of hits for other artists in the 1960s, often in collaboration with her husband Gerry Goffin, and became a celebrated singer/songwriter in the 1970s. This 2-CD set successfully captures both sides of Carole King’s career and is full of classic performances that you will listen to over and over again.

Carole King was born in 1942 and had written her first number one by the age of 17. Disc 2 of “The Essential Carole King” starts with that track, which was the brilliant “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” recorded by The Shirelles. It must have seemed a daunting task to match the success of that single, but King went on to pen many classics for other artists, including “Crying in the Rain,” “One Fine Day” and “Up on the Roof.” Those three and many more are included in this compilation.

Carole King’s real breakthrough as a solo artist came in 1971 with the release of her album “Tapestry.”

This was at number one in the US album charts for 15 weeks and won four Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. A two disc legacy edition of “Tapestry” was released in 2009, with the original album remastered and live performances from 1973 of all the album tracks.

Carole King - Tapestry: Legacy Edition

Disc 1 of the “The Essential Carole King” features several tracks from “Tapestry,” namely “I Feel the Earth Move,” “So Far Away,” “It’s Too Late” and “You’ve Got a Friend.” Also featured on Disc 1 are King’s first solo hit, “It Might As Well Rain Until September,” mid-70s highlights such as “Jazzman,” and more up to date work, including her 1990s hit “Now and Forever,” and her collaborations with Celine Dion and Babyface.

“The Essential Carole King” isn’t the most imaginative title for a compilation, but the contents provide a solid overview of the timeless songs written and performed by this gifted artist.
