Legacy Recordings will release an album of previously unheard Johnny Cash recordings in March 2014.

“Johnny Cash – Out Among the Stars” will feature 12 recently discovered songs, including two penned by Cash, and duets with June Carter Cash and Waylon Jennings. These are songs that are new to the Cash discography, not demos, outtakes or alternate versions.

The 12 songs were recorded in Nashville, Tennessee at Columbia Studios in 1981 and 1111 Sound Studios in 1984. The sessions were produced by Billy Sherrill, the architect of the “countrypolitan” sound and then head of A&R at CBS Records Nashville. Johnny’s band included a young Marty Stuart on guitar and mandolin, Jerry Kennedy on guitar, Pete Drake on steel guitar, Hargus “Pig” Robbins on piano, and Henry Strzelecki on bass.

The recordings were unearthed last year when Johnny’s son, John Carter Cash, and Cash experts at Legacy were cataloguing Johnny and June’s archives in Hendersonville, Tennessee, and at the Sony Music Archives. John Carter Cash, along with co-producer and archivist Steve Berkowitz, then enlisted Marty Stuart, Buddy Miller and Carlene Carter, and other musicians, to collaborate in restoring the album at the Cash Cabin Studios in Hendersonville.
