The Biography Channel’s “Final Hours” series turned its attention to the final day of Janis Joplin’s short life in a new DVD release.

Janis Joplin - Final 24 hours The “Final Hours” shows concentrate on the events that led to the deaths of famous people’s lives, with discussion of the artists’ back stories, but a focus on the last 24 hours of their lives.

“Janis Joplin: Her Final Hours” tells how Joplin’s drug addiction ended her life when she took a cut of nearly pure heroin on October 4, 1970. Her body was found at the Landmark Motor Hotel in Los Angeles by Full Tilt Boogie’s road manager, John Cooke, after she failed to show up at Sunset Sound Studios.

Janis Joplin had been recording a new album at the time of her death. Although she died before finishing the album, there was enough material to put together “Pearl,” which was released in 1971 and became her best selling album. This included her last ever recording “Mercedes Benz,” which was a first take and a cover of Kris Kristofferson’s “Me and Bobby McGee.” A special 2-CD edition of “Pearl” was released in 2005, including 13 live tracks from the Canadian leg of Joplin’s only tour with Full Tilt Boogie.
