“Elvis: That’s the Way It Is” on the big screen at the Barbican
Written by admin on September 29, 2013 – 6:02 pm -“Elvis: That’s the Way It Is” is among the movies that will feature in the “Yeah Yeah Yeah” film season next month at London’s Barbican. The season is curated by Bob Stanley to mark the publication of his new book “Yeah Yeah Yeah: The Story of Modern Pop“.
Bob Stanley is a founding member of the indie pop band Saint Etienne, and also a writer, musician, DJ, and film producer. He will be present to introduce each film during the “Yeah Yeah Yeah” season, and will also join music journalist and author Simon Price after the first film for a ScreenTalk and special book signing.
The Barbican’s “Yeah Yeah Yeah” film season will feature:
- “Arena – The Very Strange Story of the Legendary Joe Meek” (3 October) – The life and work of the hugely talented British record producer Joe Meek is told in this one-hour Arena special from 1991
- “Taking Off” (10 October) – Milos Forman’s 1971 movie follows a girl who runs away from home to audition for a fictional singer-songwriting superstar. There are pre-fame cameos from Carly Simon and Kathy Bates
- “Elvis: That’s the Way It Is” (17 October) – Elvis is captured in rehearsal and on stage during his summer 1970 season at the Las Vegas Hilton. The running time suggests that this is the 2001 Special Edition of the movie
- “Soul Power” (24 October) – The 2009 movie presenting the three-day festival of music that preceded the 1974 fight between Ali and Foreman in Zaire, with music from James Brown, Bill Withers, Sister Sledge and Hugh Masekela.
Each movie will be shown in Cinema 3 in Beech Street. Booking information is available on the Barbican’s website.
Bob Stanley’s “Yeah Yeah Yeah: The Story of Modern Pop” tells the story of the modern pop era, covering the birth of rock, soul, punk, disco, hip hop, indie, house and techno. The 800-page book is available for pre-order now in paperback and Kindle editions:
