John Lennon anniversary tributes
Written by admin on December 8, 2012 – 9:57 am -Today is the 32nd anniversary of the death of John Lennon. The rock legend was murdered outside the Dakota building in New York City on December 8, 1980.
John Lennon fans are gathering today from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at his Hollywood Walk of Fame Star, located at 1750 N. Vine Street in front of the Capitol Records Tower Building. The event will be hosted by Chris Carter, radio host of “Breakfast With the Beatles”. Organiser, Jerry Rubin, says:
| “Lennon and Beatles fans are invited to perform music and recite poetry, and to bring candles and flowers to place at the star. Fans are also invited to talk about things they are now doing, have done, or plan to do in their school or community to help further John’s ‘Give Peace a Chance’ message. Although the remembrance will take place on the anniversary of Lennon’s tragic murder on December 8, 1980, the public gathering is meant as a time to celebrate the life, spirit, and music of the legendary singer, songwriter, peace activist, and Beatles member.” |
Lennon fans will also be paying tribute to the late star at Strawberry Fields in New York City’s Central Park.
The Beatles Story museum in Liverpool, England, are hosting their annual John Lennon peace vigil at 7:00pm tomorrow (December 9) at the John Lennon Peace Monument, which was unveiled in October, 2010 by Julian and Cynthia Lennon. Jerry Goldman, managing director of The Beatles Story, says:
| “The eyes of the world will be on Liverpool once again as we celebrate the life of John Lennon with our annual peace vigil. Last year’s event was a wonderful success and was covered by newspapers, TV and radio all over the world. With the fiftieth anniversary of the release of the first Beatles single being celebrated this year we expect another wonderful turnout of friends and admirers to celebrate the life of the great man.” |
Filmmaker, Ray Comfort, has released a 30-minute online movie titled “Genius” to coincide with the anniversary of Lennon’s death. The film explores the spiritual aspects of Lennon’s career, and also questions American people on their attitudes to John Lennon and various religious and moral questions/dilemas.
Comfort says:
| “I produced the movie as a companion to a new book called, The Beatles, God, and the Bible. I have some strong convictions when it comes to issues the movie covers. |
| Many think that John Lennon was a musical genius. His music has crossed cultures and even generations–the Beatles have sold more than 2,303,500,000 record albums, and in June of 2012 they hit number one on iTunes. They are as big now as they ever were and they’re half dead–with the tragic loss of Lennon and Harrison. |
| Abraham Lincoln said, ‘Towering genius disdains a beaten path. It seeks regions hitherto unexplored.’ That’s what John Lennon did. He pushed the musical envelope of creativity.'” |
Those expecting a 30-minute focus on John Lennon will be disappointed, as the real intention of the movie soon becomes clear, namely to promote Comfort’s evangelical views. Comments on Lennon’s faith and religious views bookend the movie, but you might be left with the opinion that his name is being used for purposes that he wouldn’t necessarily have approved of.
