Beatles classic offered to Tom Jones

In 1968, Paul McCartney offered Tom Jones “The Long and Winding Road,” on condition that it would be Tom’s next single. As Tom already had “Delilah” lined up, he turned the song down. Now isn’t that a quirky bit of trivia to impress your friends with?

For those wondering how Tom Jones might have sounded on the song, here’s a live version from the 1980s.

Now here’s the Beatles’ lushly orchestrated, Spector-produced original.

I’m not done there with the Tom Jones trivia though! Did you know that future Led Zeppelin guitar legend Jimmy Page was a session guitarist for a while in the mid-60s and featured on Tom Jones’ smash hit “It’s Not Unusual”? You do now. Here’s the song 🙂

Jimmy Page Page played on a large number of songs as a session musician, including the Who’s debut single “I Can’t Explain,” Marianne Faithfull’s “As Tears Go By,” The Rolling Stones’ “Heart of Stone,” Van Morrison & Them’s “Baby Please Don’t Go,” the Nashville Teens’ “Tobacco Road” and Petula Clark’s “Downtown.”

Page also worked on the Kinks’ debut album but it isn’t clear which tracks he appeared on. Some are convinced that he played the legendary solo on “You Really Got Me,” which has been credited to Dave Davies. Page and the band deny that.
