Paul McCartney returns to the Hollywood Bowl
Written by admin on April 1, 2010 – 12:31 pm -Paul McCartney returned to the Hollywood Bowl for two great gigs this week as part of his “Up and Coming Tour.”
The tour kicked off in Arizona on March 28 and moved to the Hollywood Bowl for two shows on March 30 and March 31. |
McCartney’s only previous performance at the Hollywood Bowl as a solo artist was in 1993, but the Beatles famously played the venue in August 1964 and August 1965 at the height of Beatlemania. “The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl” live album released in 1977 featured tracks from these shows. Unfortunately, the album still hasn’t received a CD release.
The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl – “All My Loving”
The Beatles’ live sets lasted little more than 30 minutes and 12 songs. Now, 67-year-old McCartney is playing longer sets than ever, with 38 songs and almost three hours on stage. Of those 38, more than half are Beatles tracks. Here’s the full set list for the opening show at the Bowl (courtesy of Rolling Stone):
- “Venus And Mars/Rock Show (excerpt)/Jet”
- “All My Loving”
- “Letting Go”
- “Got To Get You Into My Life”
- “Highway”
- “Let Me Roll It” (with “Foxy Lady” coda)
- “The Long And Winding Road”
- “Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five”
- “(I Want To) Come Home”
- “My Love”
- “I’m Looking Through You”
- “Two Of Us”
- “Blackbird”
- “Here Today”
- “Dance Tonight”
- “Mrs. Vandebilt”
- “Eleanor Rigby”
- “Something”
- “Sing The Changes”
- “Band On The Run”
- “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da”
- “Back In The U.S.S.R.”
- “I’ve Got A Feeling”
- “Paperback Writer”
- “A Day In The Life (abbreviated)/Give Peace A Chance (excerpt)”
- “Let It Be”
- “Live And Let Die”
- “Hey Jude”
Encore
- “Day Tripper”
- “Lady Madonna”
- “Get Back”
- “Yesterday”
- “Helter Skelter”
- “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)/The End”
McCartney and Beatles aficionados will note some rare tracks, including “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” and “Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five,” neither of which had been played live in the US before this tour.
The decision to open with “Venus and Mars” / “Rock Show” allowed McCartney to sing the great and appropriate line “rock & roll at the Hollywood Bowl.”
McCartney paid tribute to Linda McCartney with his 1972 hit “My Love,” and to George Harrison and John Lennon with great renditions of “Something,” and “A Day in the Life” followed by “Give Peace a Chance.” He also sang his “Here Today” tribute to Lennon.

For those who can’t make any of these gigs, McCartney’s CD/DVD set “Good Evening New York City,” comes highly recommended. This features songs from McCartney’s historic three-night musical christening of New York’s Citi Field last summer.
Citi Field is the site of the former Shea Stadium where The Beatles played an historic show in 1965. |
