Tommy James honoured by Michigan lawmakers

Michigan state legislature honoured Tommy James as a “Favourite Son,” with a special presentation on the senate floor on May 26.

Tommy James and the Shondells had a series of big hits in the 60s, including six singles that sold a million – “Hanky Panky,” “I Think We’re Alone Now,” “Mony Mony,” “Crimson and Clover,” “Sweet Cherry Wine,” and “Crystal Blue Persuasion.” The band broke up in 1970, after which Tommy James went solo and had a further 13 charting singles, including “Draggin’ the Line” (#4), “Three Times in Love” (#19) “I’m Comin’ Home” (#40).

A huge number of artists have recorded covers of Tommy James’ songs, including Prince, R.E.M, Joan Jett, Tom Jones and Cher. Many more have performed his songs in concert, including Bruce Springsteen.
In October 2007, Tommy James and the original Shondells reunited to record again.
Those interested in Tommy James’ career will enjoy a new highly-rated book titled “Me, the Mob and the Music: One Helluva Ride,” in which he describes his history in the music business and his association with mob-connected record mogul, Morris Levy.
James has said that deals are being discussed to turn the book into both a film and a Broadway play.
