The original album, released in July 1974, featured highlights of Elvis’ homecoming appearance at the Midsouth Coliseum on March 20 of the same year. The album reached number one on Billboard’s country chart and earned Elvis a Grammy for best inspirational performance for the song “How Great Thou Art”.
This new Legacy Edition, like the FTD Collector’s label version before it, includes the full show, restoring a number of tracks that hadn’t been featured on the original release, including “All Shook Up,” “Steamroller Blues,” “Polk Salad Annie,” and several others.
Disc two features a show recorded at the Richmond Coliseum on March 18, 1974, as a dry run for the Memphis recording. This is a looser show and will be a welcome addition to your collection if you didn’t already pick it up via the “Forty Eight Hours To Memphis” FTD title. Also included on the second disc are five tracks from a rehearsal that took place on August 16, 1974 in Hollywood, namely “Down In The Alley,” “Good Time Charlie’s Got The Blues,” “Softly As I Leave You,” “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” and “The Twelfth Of Never”.
By 1974, Elvis’ shows were less consistent than when he first returned to live performance five years before, but he was on solid form for this Memphis show, with a number of tracks delivered more convincingly than the more celebrated “Aloha From Hawaii” show from the previous year.
The Memphis show has been remixed well, with everyone well balanced and less reverb than on the FTD edition, which means Elvis’ voice sounds natural and clear. It’s also a well presented package, with an informative 24-page booklet. Thanks go to a helpful YouTuber, who has uploaded a video to show the package:
